This Week in Health & Fitness: How to Lose Weight by Phone

Hot off the intertubes, it’s the latest edition of “This Week in Health & Fitness,” Under Armour Connected Fitness’ biweekly series in which our editorial team hand-curates the biggest stories, trends and goings-on around the world that will help you on your quest to live a healthy lifestyle. Let’s jump back in…

Weight Loss by Phone?

You read that correctly: Wellness coaching by phone yields results, according to a new study. And not just temporary fan burn — long-term, positive change. Time magazine has the scoop.(Although we here at UA Connected Fitness prefer a more traditional — yet still simple — approach to weight loss.)

Resolution Reset: Keep Your Eye on the Ball

January is over and, unfortunately, that means one-third of us have abandoned our New Year’s resolutions, according to a study. Maybe you didn’t set yourself up quite right — so argues MarketWatch.

Just Get Up and Move

OK, enough bummer stuff. We’ve got a lot of good news ahead. How about something simple? Yet another study says just the very act of getting up and moving has a direct effect on your overall happiness, according to The New York Times.

Get Buff — Like, for Real

Talk about the bare essentials. In England, one fitness enthusiast is teaching naked exercise classes. Says one enthusiastic attendee: “It’s really good being naked, especially doing core work, because you are actually able to see your core, and that’s really useful to make sure you have the right form.” [Editor’s note: squeaky-bum images contained within the link.]

Massive Group Fitness (This Time with Clothing)

Virgin Fitness has been around for a couple of years, but the newest offshoot of Sir Richard Branson’s multinational conglomerate has a new concept: fitness festivals. Four are being planned this year in the U.S. and U.K. in what the company’s CEO is envisioning as “the Coachella of sport.”

YOU TELL US > HOW ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR 2017 RESOLUTION?

The Kids Are Alright (and Fit)

Speaking of group exercise, ACTIVE crunched the numbers behind nearly 7 million event registrations and came up with a list of the Top 10 most popular American cities for extremely active millennials. There are some obvious ones: San Francisco, Seattle, Portland and youth-infused Orlando, to name a few. But you’ll be blown away to see that two Alaskan cities made the list.

OK, But Tell Us Something About Food!

How about this one: Spicy food may help you live longer. (See, we told you we had good news this week.) A new study has found that eating red hot chili peppers reduces your risk of an early demise. We recommend this recipe for sweet and spicy chicken meatballs — they’re healthy and packed with sriracha.

How About More Food Trends?

January may be over, but those lists of 2017 trends aren’t finished just yet, as CNN gives us the hottest food predictions from 11 hot chefs around the world. Fair warning: Don’t expect exotic foods or cuisines — this list is very different.

Read Your Way to Better Health

We’re not done with the lists. Sports Illustrated, of all places, compiled a good reading list of the seven best health and wellness books of 2017. Settle in for page-turners about your cellular lifespan, plant-based living, the Danish secret to life and more.

Age Is Just a Number

Last time, we wrapped with the incredible tale of twin 80-year-old sisters who hiked the entire Appalachian Trail together. Now, read the amazing story of Tao Porchon-Lynch, a 98-year-old yoga instructor who was an actress back in Golden Era Hollywood: “Breathe deeply, think good thoughts, keep moving your body and do what you love!” she says. We’re listening, Tao.
